What is Body Fat Percentage?

Body fat percentage is the total mass of fat divided by total body mass, multiplied by 100. Unlike BMI, body fat percentage distinguishes between fat mass and lean mass (muscle, bones, organs), giving a more accurate picture of body composition.

The U.S. Navy Method:

This calculator uses the U.S. Navy circumference method, which estimates body fat based on measurements of the neck, waist, and (for women) hips. While not as precise as DEXA scans or hydrostatic weighing, it provides a reasonable estimate that's free and easy to do at home.

How to Measure:

  • Neck: Measure at the narrowest point, just below the Adam's apple
  • Waist: Measure at navel level (horizontal, not at the narrowest point)
  • Hips (women): Measure at the widest point of the buttocks

Why Body Fat Matters:

Maintaining a healthy body fat percentage reduces the risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and certain cancers. It also affects hormonal balance, energy levels, and athletic performance.
